The successful operation of the mentoring scheme from Toshiba Incorporation Sydney (TIC SYD) to TOSEM in the years 2012-2013 during the early stage of service business formation has been a significant factor in TOSEM’s growth in this business. Effective operation procedures, promotion approaches, and maintenance regimes from TIC SYD have been strategically implemented and have well-supported the customers. On Job Training of TOSEM local engineers, exchange of human talents between 2 offices, and Technical Advisor (TA) accreditation further propelled TOSEM as an important solution provider among other Toshiba regional offices. With the accreditation of Toshiba Global TA of TOSEM engineers, TOSEM global TAs have made their mark worldwide with successful deployment not only to ASEAN (Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc.) but to Taiwan, Egypt, Kuwait, UAE, Nigeria, and other countries.

TOSEM has also strengthened customer support in the regional offices, including seconding key employees to PT. Toshiba Asia Pacific Indonesia (TAPI) from 2019 to 2021 and Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems (Vietnam) Ltd (TTDV) from 2021 to 2023. The synergy created by these efforts has transformed TOSEM and these regional offices into a robust solution chain for our Toshiba and non-Toshiba customers. The collaboration among Toshiba ESS, TIC SDY, and Toshiba America Energy Systems Corporation (TAES) has fostered the success of these efforts. With the vision of building a future leadership of the Asian Engineering Centre for thermal units, TOSEM will continue in partnering with other regional offices to extend the solutions beyond Malaysia.

Since April 2021, TOSEM’s offerings also include cutting-edge solutions in grid transmission comprising the latest Gas Insulated Transformer, Ester Oil Transformer, Non SF6 Gas Insulated Switchgear, Transmission Line Arrestor (External Gapped Line Arrestor), and EMS in addition to the legacy of grid solutions. These offerings supplement the already strong generation solutions, providing vast options for the clients in the region.

“I firmly believe that our unique DNA of paving continuous career paths for returning Malaysian talents from the Toshiba ESS office, local engineering talents from our formal EPC project teams, and the integration of new talents from the energy fraternity have been crucial factors in achieving our 20th year milestone. Multilingual skills in Japanese, English, Malay, Mandarin, Tamil, and other dialects, as well as being nurtured in a multiracial culture, have made our versatile employees communicate effectively across all levels, internally and externally.” Says Choo.

Look for a better way: Overcoming Challenges

Toshiba’s differentiators are understanding the customers’ needs, providing solutions that bring higher value to customers, and keeping the deadlines. It wasn’t always smooth sailing in the progress. Mr. Mohammad Zulhusmi (Husmi), the Solution Manager in Power Division, shares with us his experience in facing obstacles in a major project.
